The Northrups met and began dating their freshman year of college at Yale, but it took until their late twenties for Dabney to agree to marry Max. Early on in her teens, Dabney had learned that she had a medical disorder which, she was told, would make it very difficult, if not impossible, for her to have biological children, and although she certainly loved Max, she didn't think it would be fair to burden him with this issue. He refused to take no for an answer, though, and eventually the two married, and adopted a daughter shortly thereafter. Now, after years of trying numerous radical fertility treatments, the Northrups are expecting twins, a boy and a girl!
