I think John is a great name, not plain and dull at all.
It is popular but not like a trendy name that gets overexposed and dated.It is a classic and has a long history and so many versions of the name.
I like James a lot too, I think both work really well with Alan.
I would like to name a son John, but my husband says no.
Hard to say who comes to mind, there are so many Johns. John Lennon is one I always think of and maybe his image has rubbed off on the name for me.
