My husband Fred has been dreaming of going to California ever since his brother moved out west last year. He was so nervous when he asked me to marry him and make the journey with him. He was sure I'd say no. If my parents and my sisters were still alive, I might have, but now that my family is gone, there's little reason for me to stay here. Fred is the most important person in my life now, and I'd follow him anywhere.
We will be leaving in one week, on the six month anniversary of our marriage. I am a little frightened at the prospect of such a long journey. I've heard that the trail is difficult and there are all kinds of dangers, but Fred is confident that we will be alright. It's also sad to be leaving my home behind, even though most of the people I cared about here are gone, but I'm excited about building a new life in California.
