[Opinions] a dilemma with names and nicknames...
OKay so awhile ago the name Cadence (for a girl) was brought to my attention by someone on this messageboard. I thought it was pretty and sweet but it never really stood out to me. However it has recently came back to haunt me and I have fell in love with it. (pro. KAYD-ence). I also realise this is the classic and proper way of spelling this name.
I love the tales of the otori series and I love the look of the name Kaede. But after doing some research of the pronounciation I realise it is said different from what I said in my head which was KAYD rather than KAY-EH-day. Nevertheless I still love the name and my pronounciation.
So to sum up I love the name Cadence with the nickname Cade. But I don't really like Cade as it is masculine and quite a popular male name in the States I think.
So is it horrible to use Kaedence (rather than Cadence) with the lovely nickname of Kaede?
I also like the more feminine spelling of Kaide for Cade but then the Cadence part would be spelt Kaidence. Is this horrible too? I quite like it as it seems much more feminine and flowery.
Another also is I am quite close to my cousin who is called Kay so are the names to similar ? I don't think I'll be living anywhere near her when I do have a child but does it still matter? I love her dearly but I don't want people thinking I named her after Kay.
So what are your opinions and advice? Please help me - I'm in a very confucing dilemma !
Thanks x

I'm sorry - in my opinion, yes, it's bad. You can't have it both ways. I would rather see you name her either Kaede or Cadence, not try to combine the two. Combining them into one spelling - or respelling the word Cadence at all - to me sort of dumbs the name down, from a lovely concept-name to a "pretty sound and look." And as such it seems more trivial and shallow.
I think you'd be perfectly okay to name her Cadence and call her Kaede, and spell it like that, and say she's named in honor of Kay.

I'm not a big fan of Cadence in the first place, but I'd much rather see that than Kaedence or Kaidence. Neither spelling is out of the realms of possibility (I've seen both before), but they are kreaytif enough that I wouldn't smile if I saw them in the BAs.
If you want to call her Kaede, do so. Nicknames don't have to be spelled like the name itself; I love Cassandra nn Kassy. Cadence nn Kaede is a far sight better than Kaedence nn Kaede, IMO--because Cadence is more than just a name. It's a word. And if you're going to use a name that's also a word, it looks plain ignorant to misspell it.
And unless you have weird family naming dynamics, I don't see why it'd be too close to Kay, particularly if you don't think you'll be anywhere near her.

I agree completely that nicknames don't need to match the name in spelling, and that a word name like Cadence really ought to be spelled with the correct spelling of the word. I don't see a problem with Cadence (spelled that way) with any of the nn's that you were considering.
However, I would avoid the spellings Kaidence and Kaide--I would pronounce Kaidence as KIED-ence (first syllable vowel like the word "eye"), not KAYD-ence. Also, I'd tend to pronounce Kaede as KAY-dee rather than your pronunciation KAYD; I don't know if most people would think it was one or two syllables, but thought you might want to know.
Edit: weird spacing

Hmm.
I actually agree with you about Kaede, now that I think about it -- I'd tend to say it as 2 syllables too (ky-da for me). Reminds me of Al-Qaeda, in fact.

You could use Cadence with these nicknames...
Cady (KAY-dee)
Ada
Denny
Cay-Cay (KAY-KAY)
Cenna (SENN-a)
Denna
Sadie
Cenna (KEN-na)
Kaedence isn't terriblue, but it is a little kr8tif looking. I LOVE Kaede as the nickname. Couldn't you use Caede for the "c" spelling? And Cade really isn't that bad actually. Tell me what you think!

I really like Caede and Ada is a nice idea too ! .
First of all I really like Cadence but I can't stand C- names spelled with a K. Why not spell it Caedence with the nn Caede? Or Caidence (but I don't like this spelling).
If you absolutely want to spell it with a K I think Kaidence is the best. I don't know if the NN Kaede is so special to you that you don't want to change the spelling, but since it's also a name from the otori series (no idea what that is...) and it has a different pronounciation I think you could change the K to a C without spoiling the name.

Thanks I really like your ideas ! .
