I really like Elissa/Elyssa.

People always assume my formal name is Melissa, thinking my name is a nickname, but it's not, in my case I say Melis.

My name is Melissa and Everyone calls me missy. they always have. many people don't know my name is MElissa. i really like lissa because one of my friends calls me Miss Lissa which sounds like Melissa. Go Figure.

I'd go with Milly or Lissa. Mia isn't bad either. I think Ellie and Ellis are too contrived to come from Melissa (this coming from a person who decided a few years ago that Erin would be a good nickname for Catherine, but never mind), and Elissa is practically the same name.
I'm not sure how you'd tell people outright that you want to be called a different name, but I've found that by correcting people if they call you by a different nickname (for example, people call me Cath or Cathy. I tend to make a face because I hate the nicknames, and I tell them that I prefer Cate) and also signing notes/texts with your nickname helps it get it into people's heads.

It's probably going to be difficult for your family members and friends to adapt to this situation, but if you care to yell at them every time they call you Melissa instead of you new nickname, they ought to get used to it eventually ;)

I like Lissa best as a nn for Melissa.

I love Ellie. I like Ella, Elle, and Mel too. You could simply tell friend and family, "I've decided I'd like to go by ______. I would appreciate it if you all could call me that from now on." Then, explain your reasons why.
