[Opinions] Re: Ariella (plus a note)
Note: Your sig that says you want to give your daughter the mn Rene isn't right. The proper feminine form is ReneeI really like Ariella. Poss. nn Ella.

I don't want this to turn into a huge debate (sorry that it did), but I just personally prefer the spelling Rene. I realize it's the masculine spelling; I mentioned that when I first posted about using Rene as a MN. Besides, it's just a name that I like at the moment. I'm not planning on having children anytime soon, so who knows, my naming style may very well change by then. I simply like the name to honor my brother & my sister. My brother's MN is Ryan & my sister's MN is Danae; put them together & I get Rene (with whatever spelling). Renee, Rene, Renae. I've seen all of them used on girls & I've never really heard of anyone getting funny looks because they're name was spelled Rene. I'm using it as a MN, not as a FN, so I don't see the big deal really. Anyway, I just wanted to point out that I realize the spelling I've chosen may not be liked by everyone, but it's my preference.

--> Lol, you're almost apologising for your taste here! You shouldn't. I don't really like how someone brought this up and "corrected" you about your sig, when you didn't ask for opinions. However, I feel a rant coming on ...I love BtN, but I do have a problem with the elite that's formed here. A couple of people, who all share a specific taste and have formulated rules of "legit" and "not legit", tend to team up and give others (especially newbies) patronising lectures about why the names they like are not legit. The way they come across is not "I don't like such-and-such" but "such-and-such is wrong, no room for discussion". It's very tiresome imo, and I don't think anyone should think of themselves in this elevated position. Everyone else's opinions are no less valid. So whatever you do, make no apologies for your style. That'll only encourage the controlling regulars I'm talking about ;-)_____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

If someone consciously chooses to use the spelling Rene, and that's how they spell it on the birth certificate, it becomes "right". (a) Naming is a part of language, not a science, and there is leeway in languageand (b) In the US which is presumably where you are, you can choose any name you like with few exceptions, there are not set rules of spellingYou might not like Rene for a girl, but it makes no sense to say it isn't "right"._____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that

She can name her daughter any name she wants. I happen to like Rene rather than Renee. It's better than Tootsie Roll, Apple, and Amy May/May Amy, by all means.

I think mariej2 was just pointing out that Renee is the proper feminine form. You could name a girl Rene, but that doesn't make Rene a female name.Personally I think Rene for a girl looks uneducated or poorly thought out, like you didn't know the feminine form. The names are pronounced the same, so I don't see the point in not using Renee for a girl.Shannon (who knows there's an accent on the first 'e' in Renee but can't put it there with this keyboard.)

I was just trying to explain that it didn't matter if it were feminine or masculine. I thought mariej2 made it sound like Renee was the 'proper' and only form you should ever use on a girl. That's just the was I interpreted it. Sorry if I get anyone angry about it.

Don't worry, I agree with you. It's not so much the Renee / Rene thing, but mariej2's constantly high-handed and pretentious attitude about what's "right" or "wrong" that grates.

I agreeRené is the masculine form, Renée is the feminine form. If you don't know the rule, it's the same as with fiancé/fiancée; one "e" on the end is masculine and two is feminine. A girl named René would probably get weird looks if she ever traveled to a French-speaking area.

I think French-speaking people have far better things to do with their time than give a foreign girl named Rene "weird looks". Despite living in Scotland where Mc- and Mac- surnames are hugely popular, accounting for about a quarter of surnames, if I met an American girl named McKayla I wouldn't give her a "weird look". I'd know fine well it was a cultural difference. I might not like McKayla - indeed I don't - but it wouldn't baffle me and it certainly wouldn't cause me to be rude and give someone a strange look._____________________________________________________________________"There are few more distressing sights than that
