[Facts] Evoking the Greek Masters, please
Dear Olympus inhabitants, I once met a Greek guy who's name is Yanakis(nn Yani). He told me that this is a common name in Greece and that it is a very manly name. As I could not find it on this web site's data base, I was wondering if you could tell me it's meaning and any other impression on the name. Thanks lots :o)

Hi Magia,Yannis is a very common name in Greece, and Yani is used as a nickname. The name is the Greek John.Yanakis is very indicative of a surname. The "akis" ending is very popular surname ending among people from Crete. I was told the "akis" ending was related to the Greek work Pathakyas (phonetically spelling), which means children. So that surname would mean 'children of John'.Pavlos, will come to comfirm/correct. :-P

Indeed, Anastasia, most Greek surnames ending with "-akis" are form Crete. The ending "-akis" in first names is diminutive. So, what Johnny is to John, Yannakis is to Yanni. George Dubya, for example, is not-so-affectionately known as "Georgaki" in Greeca, as opposed to his dad George. The word you mention Anastasia, is "paidaki" (little child) as opposed to "paidi" (child).PS: So much for the manlines of your GGL friend's name, Magia :P No self-respecting Greek male would continue calling himself "Little John" beyond the age of 13 :).

You know it all!Pavlos, are you just as excellent in finding the meaning of Greek surnames? I'm curious as to what my surname means. My father is from Crete, so I got the 'akis' part down, but that's it.P.S. My family is very manly!, none of my three brothers were called Vangelakis, Andonakis or Angeloakis!Take Care.

I'll post it here. I’m too boring to have a stalker! And honestly obtaining a stalker would add needed excitement to my life ;-PIt's Liotsakis. Thanks Pavlos :)

Growl!Boring? Au contraire!
All variations of your surname Liotsakis/Leotsakis/Liotsakos etc are derived from "leon", i.e., lion!
So any stalker better think twice before bugging a Liotsakis, unless armed with a tranquilizer gun :P

That's pretty cool. I have a fierce last name!. I always thought it derived from Lion but the S and T were causing me doubt. So does that mean the first Liotsakis bunch were the children of a guy name Leonos or Leonidas? Or were we circus trainers who tamed Lions?! :)Thanks again Pavlos.
