Could it be...

Considered a male form, as Belle is to female as Beau is to male?

My own counter argument is that there are records of Henry VIII calling the Princess Elizabeth dear "Ysabeau", so I doubt it was a unisex nickname (rather, just a female play of Isabelle, as a nn for Elizabeth)

It does sound boyish to most, but with Margot, Brunehaut, Mahaut... is one of the female French Middle Ages names ending in -o :)

No, because if I remember correctly the endings are -elle and -eau.
