[Opinions] Mariposa
Hi folks,I haven't posted for a while but I have been scanning the boards now and then. In any case, I'm curious about your opinions on using Mariposa as a name (it means butterfly in Spanish...honestly, not like the way Nevaeh means butterfly in "Slavic" *grin*).I like the meaning and the way it sounds (mah-ree-PO-sah). Also, there'd be the option of using the nn Mari if she preferred. However, there's not a lot of Spanish spoken where I live, so I don't know whether or not it would be too silly or weird if she ever went to a Spanish speaking country. WDYT?~ Caitlín

I think it's kind of sweet. I wouldn't ever use it, it's a little TOO different for me, but it's not bad at all. Someone mentioned Posey as a possible nn, and that's just adorable imo. :)One of the Phoenix sisters (sister of Joaquin/Leaf Phoenix and River Phoenix) is named Libertad Mariposa which translates to Liberty Butterfly (which she may have changed her name to, I'm not sure) and she goes by Liberty.

I like it,but I speak spanish and the first thing that came to mind was "butterfly?"
It sounds really pretty, but with all the Spanish being taught in American schools she might be teased. If you really like it go for it!~Memento Mori~

As in the store?
Inside of me there is a skinny girl, screaming to get out but I can usually shut her up with cookies!

I like it as a name, but I heard on another board (I think it was BNaBBT) that in some Spanish-speaking countries, Mariposa is used as offensive slang against homosexuals in the same way as 'fairy' is used in English-speaking countries. If that's right, it puts me off completely.

NO...Maricon is that slang. Not Mariposa.

Oh, I didn't know that. If it's true, then using it as a name would be a BAD idea :(

I think Mariposa is really lovely. It's no different than names like Paloma, Luz, and Estrella IMO.Mari is a cute nn, though Posie could work, too.Shannon

I think that Spaniards would laugh at you. It's ridiculous.

Why?They use Estrella, Luz, and Paloma, why would Mariposa be so different?

Probably for the same reason that most Americans wouldn't bat an eyelash at someone naming their child Rose, Lily, Robin, or numerous other word names, but would laugh at someone who named their daughter Butterfly. Some words are generally accepted as names, some are not.

Mari is very cute (it's also the name of an ancient city). But Mariposa reminds me of "adipeuse", "greasy, fat"...

Honestly, I hate the name. The way it looks, sounds, even the meaning. It could be because there is a very cheap store in North America (maybe just Canada?) called this and they make poor quality clothes.

I doubt it would matter if she ever went to a Spanish speaking country. I mean, Alta, Sol, Dulce, and Estrella are Spanish words and no one says anything about them. I like it some and Mari is cute as a nn if it's accented ont he second syllable. Mah-REE.
Ari, Posy, and Maris are cute nicknames too. -Seda*

LOVE Mariposa/Butterfly

It might be weird, but since the chances of her ever deciding to settle in Mexico or Spain are slim, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I like Mariposa. Posy is another nice nn.
