Why is the word "fairy" socially unacceptable? Is it a term for something in the US? I'm living in Scotland and it definitely means nothing untoward here.

but that never really stopped people naming girls Nancy or Pansy, did it? I dunno.

your questioneleanor:although pansy and, to a lesser extent, nancy, have also been used as an insult to gay men, i do not believe they ever gained the "popularity" (or, virulence) of fairy (at least in the states). nancy is only used in that context very rarely these days.

I didn't think it was sociable unaccptable for that reason, but that adds to the reason.It's just not an acceptable English name.... You know if you want to call your self Fairy go ahead!.
