[Opinions] The saint, for those interested
in reply to a message by Miss Claire
Is here: http://snipurl.com/e5w3. A linked site says the name is properly pronounced gah-dah-LEE, but that others have debated on several Anglicised pronunciations: ka-ter-EE, kat-EE-rie (or kat-EE-ree; it was spelled KatEEri on the site), or ka-ter-AY.
I agree that it's a very interesting name. Certainly, it's unusual, if for no other fact that it's one of the few translations of European names into any Native American language. The strong religious componet (the saint did coin the name, after all) slightly puts me off due to my lack-of faith, but I think I could get over it fairly easily.
If I had my choice of pronunciations, I'd choose kat-EE-rie, simply because ka-ter-EE and kat-EE-ree sounds like "cattery" to me. As I'm a stickler for the most part of proper pronunciations, though, I'll have to say that gah-dah-LEE sounds rather nice to me. The only problem, of course, is the problems other people might have pronouncing it, because gah-dah-LEE is obviously not the intuitive pronunciation.
