BtN doesn't mention it, but on a small scale, Julian has always been used for females. It was the English form of both Julianus *and* Juliana, and in medieval times it was one of the commonest girls' names from which modern Gillian is derived.
There was also a female saint, Blessed Julian of Norwich, bearing the name.
So it is every bit as legitimate as a girls' name, *and* has the benefit of being more unusual that way. IN fact, if you go by the "original" gender, it is even more credible when it's female as it's been used on females for longer :-)
