To me, the name sounds very 19th-century-novelish .. sort of soft and marshmallowy. Not bad, though; interesting, and a real bearer could quickly overcome that impression. I doubt that if you named your son Richard, he'd want to call himself Dickon at school though - at least not for long, unless he turned out to have a really popular personality that let him get away with it. I do think you could certainly name him Richard and call him Dickon yourself, and let him go by Rick or Rich with his peers if that suited him better. You'd have to try it and see .. it's not an awful idea. I just wouldn't hope too hard that he'd go by Dickon, if I were you.
