[Opinions] Anneliese and Liesl
How do most of you pronounce these? We live in Texas and I am worried we might get "Anna-Lisa" instead of the "On-Uh-Lee-Zuh" (German pronunciation-ish) we are looking for. Also, is this the way Liesl is spelled in "The Sound of Music"? Would you say it "Lee-zull" or "Lee-sill"?

South Africa...(M)I know a woman from South Africa who is named Anneliese and she pronounces it Ah-nuh-leeze, so it might depend on what country? I would say Liesl Lee-zil, I love the Sound of Music and would use Liesl myself if I wasn't so obviously not Austrian if you know what I mean. :)

Well, I am Dutch and my German grandmothers name is Anneliese. I like it! I like Liesl also, but it is a bit old fashioned here... But that doesn't matter in Texas :-)

Liesl is pronounced "Lee sill" in German. I am German and SORRY - that name is just very OLD. *gg*
It's my grandmother's name and she even doesn't have a lot of friends with that name.If your child should ever visit Germany...well expect some weird reactions - it's just not used anymore. If you use it because of origin or whatever - I can help you out with tons of nice German names.

I am glad to know that Liesl is "OLD" in Germany. My 2 year old's name is Gemma Rose, which is NEVER heard in the U.S., unless you emigrated here from the UK or Italy. I am looking for a name for the next baby that is more European in nature, but fairly easy to pronounce when you see it. My name is Kristin, but you'd choke on how many people do a dyslexic take on it or add letters that are not there when they pronounce it...and I'd like to try to get a name that is unusual, but is still a very legitimate name and is difficult to screw up. We are both third generation "off the boat" German so we'd be very interested in hearing German names that would work for today's baby.!!
