I hadn't even thought of the Roxanne-connection! You're right about that original pronunciation -- I have a sourcebook which lists the original form of "Roxanne" as being "Raokshna". There's definitely that "sh" sound in there.
I propose, for a future Behind-the-Name Project, that a bunch of us maybe set about Soundex-ing the names on Mike C.'s website. Both "Roxanne" and "Roshanne" would have the same encoding of R250, and connections might be more easily made that way. Especially considering all the variant spellings there are for modern names.
