Nelly is ok, but nmsaa, and reminds me of the song...Ellie is kinda nice, but *very* popular! I love Lena, prn Lay-na or Lee-na, depending on how you prn Elena. Also Laya could work (if you prn Elena El-ay-na. Not sure how you'd spell it though), or Lea/h if you prn it the other way.

I don't think a nickname is necessary for Elena, and I can't say I like Nelly. It reminds me of horses (which I don't like) and Nellie Oleson from the Little House books (who was awful). If I had a daughter named Elena, I would call her by her full name--or by a nickname completely unrelated to her name, like Slinky or Cricket. I'm all right with having an idea of a nickname in mind with a name, if it's a longer one with several options, just so an Elizabeth didn't automatically become a Liz. But with a short name without many nicknames (like Elena), I think it's silly.Array

I don't think that Nelly goes well as a nn for Elena, I would probably use something like Elle.

Ellie, Lena, or Leni come to mind. Elena is one of my favorites.

I don't care for the name Elena, and I don't think nicknames should be planned by the parent(s) (before the child is even born, no less!), but left up to the child. Nonetheless, I suppose Nelly could work.

An Elena I know is often called Lainey. I'm not sure if that is how it would be spelled, but I do like the sound of it. Her name is Elena Lynne. Isn't that cheery to say?
